Overview
This is an original framed 1955 calendar featuring the iconic 'Golden Dreams' pin-up photograph of Marilyn Monroe, captured by photographer Tom Kelley in 1949. This specific image launched Marilyn into superstardom after it was purchased by Hugh Hefner for the inaugural issue of Playboy magazine in 1953.
Story
In 1949, a broke, pre-fame Marilyn Monroe was paid just $50 to pose nude on red velvet. By 1955, that single, desperate session had become the most famous pin-up image in history, defining her career and a new era of American sexuality.
Maker / Origin
Photographer Tom Kelley captured this legendary image in his Los Angeles studio, using a red velvet drape as the backdrop and his wife Natalie to help put Marilyn at ease. The calendar itself was produced by the John Baumgarth Company, a major mid-century novelty and calendar publisher that distributed these pin-ups to garages, barber shops, and offices across America.
Condition & Value
The calendar appears to be in very good vintage condition with strong red tones, which are highly susceptible to fading. It is framed under glass, which has helped preserve the paper, though some minor toning is visible. Excellent preservation of the red pigment commands a premium in the collector market.
