Overview
A striking example of 'Black Amethyst' pressed glass, this decorative boot vase mimics the high-buttoned footwear of the Victorian era. While it appears jet black, it is actually a deep, translucent purple when held to a strong light source.
Story
Victorian ladies' boots became a popular novelty shape for glassmakers during the Depression and post-war eras. These whimsical pieces allowed mid-century housewives to display a touch of 19th-century romanticism on their mantels.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1905, Fenton is legendary for its colored glass and was the largest manufacturer of handmade colored glass in the United States. They were masters of the 'Black Amethyst' formula, which used manganese and iron to achieve its mysterious, light-absorbing depth.
Condition & Value
The glass appears to have a strong luster with no visible chips to the delicate 'top' of the boot or the heel. Minor shelf wear on the bottom is expected. Excellent condition maintains the higher end of the value range. Fenton glass shoes are highly collectible but common.
