Overview
A striking three-footed rose bowl crafted in 'Black Amethyst' glass, featuring a classic Neoclassical Greek Key (meander) embossed band. It retains its original matching perforated lid, known as a 'flower frog,' designed to hold individual stems in a precise arrangement.
Story
During the Great Depression, glassmakers used deep purple manganese to create glass that appeared pitch black until held to a bright light. This piece brought affordable Art Deco elegance to homes when luxury was scarce.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1907, L.E. Smith became legendary for their 'Black Amethyst' glass, surviving the Depression by pivoting to functional yet stylish household items. They were one of the few American factories to master this specific, ink-dark coloration.
Condition & Value
The glass appears to have good luster, though there is visible surface dust and potential minor flea bites around the lid's holes. The presence of both pieces significantly stabilizes the value. Value is driven by the presence of the original lid, which is often lost or broken.
