Overview
A beautifully molded earthenware majolica dish shaped as a naturalistic leaf, featuring vibrant green, yellow, and pink lead glazes. The underside bears the distinctive circular impressed mark of the Schramberg factory with the 'SMF' monogram and 'DEUTSCHLAND' text.
Story
In the early 1900s, German potters in the Black Forest captured the wild beauty of nature in clay. This leaf dish was designed to bring the freshness of the outdoors directly onto the formal dining tables of Europe's rising middle class.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1820 in a historic castle, the Schramberg Majolica Factory (Schramberger Majolikafabrik) became famous for its high-quality earthenware. By the early 20th century, under the artistic influence of designers like Eva Zeisel in later years, the company transitioned from traditional rustic designs to cutting-edge Art Deco and Jugendstil masterpieces.
Condition & Value
The dish shows fine, age-appropriate crazing throughout the glaze, which is entirely normal and expected for antique majolica. There is a tiny glaze flake or manufacturing pop on the underside rim, but the front face appears remarkably vibrant with no major chips or cracks. Excellent preservation of glaze color.
