Overview
A pair of hand-carved salad servers crafted from natural bovine horn, featuring a sleek, minimalist profile characteristic of Mid-Century Modern design. The set showcases a stunning natural variegation, transitioning from translucent honey-gold to deep obsidian-black streaks.
Story
Long before synthetic polymers, horn was the world's first 'natural plastic.' Artisans in the 1950s revived this ancient material to create sleek, organic tableware that fit the era's obsession with nature-inspired modernism.
Maker / Origin
While these lack a maker's mark, they follow the tradition of European workshops like Hornvarefabrikken in Denmark or French ateliers in the Jura region. These craftsmen specialized in 'thermoplastic' manipulation, using steam and heat to bend solid horn into ergonomic, functional art.
Condition & Value
The servers show light surface scratches and minor 'delamination' typical of aged organic material. There are no visible chips to the fork tines or spoon edge, which preserves their utility and value. Regular oiling with food-grade mineral oil will prevent further drying.
