Overview
A complete matching set of five Japanese blue-and-white porcelain serving bowls (bachi), accompanied by their original fitted wooden storage box (tomobako). Each bowl is dynamically hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue (sometsuke) featuring an encircling dragon amidst swirling celestial clouds, wrapping from the interior floor up and around the exterior rim.
Story
Centuries ago in Arita, Japanese potters mastered the mythical unryū (cloud dragon) motif, wrapping the auspicious creature across both interior and exterior porcelain walls so the beast seems to emerge directly from the vessel.
Maker / Origin
Produced by master artisans in the historic kiln network of Arita in Saga Prefecture, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. Although individual painters rarely signed Edo-period tableware, the unified rhythm and spirited line work reflect a workshop tradition perfected over generations under the supervision of the Nabeshima clan.
Condition & Value
Very good antique condition overall with strong cobalt pigmentation; minor kiln firing specks (iron spots) and expected shelf wear along the unglazed foot rings, but no obvious cracks or major structural repairs visible. The complete set of 5 with period box significantly enhances value.
