Overview
An exquisite Chinese porcelain bowl decorated in the delicate Famille Rose (Fencai) palette, featuring two finely detailed birds perched on a scholar's rock amidst bamboo and blossoming flowers. The underside bears a four-character iron-red hall mark reading 'Jiusi Tang Zhi' (Made for the Hall of Nine Remembrances), indicating a custom commission for a refined private residence or scholar's studio.
Story
Commissioned for the 'Hall of Nine Remembrances'—a name inspired by the Confucian Analects on self-reflection—this bowl was made for a scholar's home. Its birds and bamboo symbolize resilience and quiet contemplation during a period of immense cultural transition in China.
Maker / Origin
While the specific artist remains anonymous, this piece was crafted by highly skilled decorators in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, private studios and 'hall mark' (tangzhi) workshops produced some of the finest, most painterly wares of the era, rivaling imperial quality for private patrons.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in very good condition with vibrant enamels and minimal wear to the painted surface. There is a tiny, shallow nick or glaze flake on the upper rim visible in the second photo, which is common for utilitarian porcelain of this age and slightly softens the value.
