Overview
These are classic Acoustic Research AR-2ax high-fidelity loudspeakers, featuring the iconic oiled walnut cabinets and off-white linen-weave grilles. Renowned for their acoustic suspension design, they delivered deep, clean bass from a relatively compact cabinet, revolutionizing home audio.
Story
In 1954, Edgar Villchur changed music forever in a Cambridge basement. By sealing the speaker cabinet completely, he used trapped air as a perfect spring, letting families hear deep concert-hall bass in their living rooms for the first time.
Maker / Origin
Acoustic Research (AR) was founded by audio pioneer Edgar Villchur and his student Henry Kloss. Together, they dismantled the giant horn-speaker monopoly of the era, proving that smaller, beautifully designed cabinets could produce superior, low-distortion sound. Their designs laid the groundwork for modern consumer audio.
Condition & Value
The walnut cabinets show minor surface wear but appear structurally sound. The original linen grilles show light age-related discoloration but are intact with the original badges. The internal drivers and crossover electronics are untested, which is the primary variable for vintage audio collectors.
