Overview
A striking Chinese porcelain vase featuring hand-painted figures from the classic 14th-century epic novel 'Water Margin' (Shuihu Zhuan). The characters are rendered in the vibrant Famille Verte palette over a soft, celadon-green ground, complete with identifying name tags hanging from their belts.
Story
Centuries before modern comic books, Chinese storytellers used porcelain to immortalize the 108 outlaw heroes of Mount Liang. These legendary outlaws fought corrupt officials, acting as Robin Hood-style protectors of the common people.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned by a specific artist, this vase was crafted in Jingdezhen, the historic porcelain capital of China. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, private kilns here experienced a major artistic revival, specializing in highly detailed historical and literary narratives for a rising merchant class.
Condition & Value
The visible enamel decoration appears remarkably intact with minimal rubbing or loss. There is some light surface wear and minor glaze imperfections consistent with age. Excellent preservation of the enamels generally commands a premium.
