Overview
An exquisite turn-of-the-century mantel clock featuring a spherical cream-colored porcelain case cradled by ornate cast metal mounts. The design is flanked by beautifully detailed winged cherubs acting as side handles, resting on a heavily decorated rococo-style plinth base. The gilded brass dial features stylized Arabic numerals, an intricate center medallion, and original spade hands.
Story
Patented in 1904, this clock model was named 'La Tosca' during the height of Puccini's opera craze. It brought the theatrical romance of the European stage straight into the parlors of Gilded Age American homes.
Maker / Origin
The Ansonia Clock Company was one of the giants of 19th-century American clockmaking, known for translating elite European styles into accessible luxury. Operating out of a massive factory in Brooklyn, New York, they pioneered the use of cast spelter and porcelain to create incredibly dramatic, sculptural timepieces that rivaled French imports.
Condition & Value
The clock appears to be in good, complete vintage condition with its original winding key and rear brass door present. There is minor paint loss and chipping on the cream porcelain casing, particularly near the top rim, and typical oxidation/patina wear to the gilt metal surfaces.
