Overview

This remarkable set consists of 30 blue-and-white porcelain deep small dishes (mukouzuke or small bowls) housed in their original inscribed wooden tomobako box. Each piece features a central hand-painted mythical Qilin (Kirin) surrounded by a traditional scrolling border and chocolate-brown (fuchizumi) glazed rim.

Story

Crafted in 19th-century Japan, these small dishes were made for traditional multi-course Kaiseki banquets where complete 30-piece sets were reserved for wealthy hosts. The central motif depicts the Qilin, a benevolent mythical creature believed to appear only during times of peace and prosperity.

Maker / Origin

The wooden box is inscribed 'Kutani-yaki' (Kutani ware), specifically referencing Nanjing-style (Nanjing-utsushi) blue-and-white sometsuke production. Kutani kilns in Ishikawa Prefecture are world-renowned for rich porcelain traditions, blending Chinese imperial influences with distinct Japanese aesthetic refinement.

Condition & Value

Multiple dishes exhibit noticeable rim chips, visible cracks, and old fractures. The wooden box shows age-related patina and staining. The damage across several pieces reduces the commercial value by approximately 40-50%.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
