Overview
This is an original Edo-period horizontal woodblock print (koban or chuban format) depicting Okazaki Castle and the surrounding landscape along the Tokaido road. It comes from Hokusai's early Tokaido landscape series titled 'Fifty-Three Pack-Horse Loads for Springtime' (Shunkyō Gojūsan-tsugi), published around 1804.
Story
In 1804, three decades before Hiroshige's iconic Tokaido series, Hokusai captured Japan's great highway in this delicate print series, framing Okazaki Castle amidst misty riverbanks.
Maker / Origin
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is widely recognized as one of history's greatest masters of ukiyo-e, most famous for 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa'. Constantly reinventing himself across dozens of art names, his early-1800s landscape series laid the foundational visual grammar for travel art across Japan.
Condition & Value
Fair to good antique condition. Shows authentic age-appropriate toning, light edge wear, minor foxing/smudging in the sky area, and expected bleed-through on the verso. Slight trimming to the borders is possible. Preserving original colors without extensive fading keeps it well within collectible market value.
