Overview

This substantial 31 cm porcelain deep bowl features a soft celadon-green ground decorated in raised 'famille rose' overglaze enamels. The interior and exterior display a harmonious bird-and-flower scene with pink egrets, blooming lotuses, and lily pads, framed by an intricate cloud-head border at the rim. The underside bears an apocryphal six-character Qianlong reign mark inside a square seal.

Story

Chinese porcelain decorators have long used egrets paired with lotus blossoms as a visual pun: 'lu' (egret) sounds like 'path' and 'lien' (lotus) sounds like 'continuous,' wishing the owner continuous success. While marked for Emperor Qianlong, this piece belongs to a rich modern revival of 18th-century palace styles.

Maker / Origin

The workshops of Jingdezhen have produced imperial and decorative ceramics for over a millennium. Modern artisans continue to master complex multi-fired enamel techniques, frequently applying historic reign marks like Qianlong's as a homage to the golden age of Qing Dynasty ceramic art.

Condition & Value

Appears in good decorative condition with vibrant enamel colors intact. Minimal visible wear to the rim and interior; foot ring shows typical minor discoloration from display. Valued as a decorative 20th-century Chinese porcelain bowl.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
