Overview
A beautifully expressive, hand-carved wooden figure depicting a contemplative monk or saint wearing a pectoral cross. The piece is carved from a single block of wood, showcasing the bold, faceted chisel marks characteristic of traditional Polish folk sculpture.
Story
Deep in the forests of Poland, a post-war cultural movement revived ancient woodcarving traditions to preserve national identity. This monk, with his serene closed eyes and heavy robes, was carved by a village artisan whose craft was protected by state-sponsored guilds.
Maker / Origin
While the individual carver remains anonymous, the paper label on the underside features Polish text ('RZEŹBIARSTWO W...' meaning 'Sculpture in...'), which strongly points to Cepelia. Cepelia was the Polish state cooperative founded in 1949 to safeguard, organize, and export authentic regional folk art, bringing the work of rural master carvers to the global stage.
Condition & Value
The carving is in good vintage condition with a warm, aged patina. There is some minor dust accumulation in the crevices and typical light wear to the base, but no major splits, chips, or missing elements. The original paper label is partially torn but remains mostly legible, which adds historical value.
