Overview
This is a beautiful vintage 'Sosaku' (creative) Kokeshi doll, hand-carved and painted by the award-winning master artisan Miyashita Hajime. It features a wonderfully expressive, minimalist face with delicate side buns, wearing a black-lacquered kimono decorated with vibrant red hand-painted chrysanthemums.
Story
In post-WWII Japan, a group of rebellious woodturners broke away from centuries of rigid doll-making rules. They created 'Sosaku' Kokeshi, using the wood's natural grain to express modern artistic freedom and individual emotion.
Maker / Origin
Miyashita Hajime (1940-2012) was one of the most celebrated creative Kokeshi artists of the Showa era, winning the prestigious Prime Minister's Award. His works are highly sought after for their gentle, poetic facial expressions and innovative use of multi-part wooden construction.
Condition & Value
The doll is in good vintage condition with minor surface wear, light scuffs, and natural aging/patina to the unfinished wood. The painted details and delicate side buns are fully intact, which is excellent as these protruding elements are highly prone to breaking. Value is driven by the signature of Miyashita Hajime on the base.
