Story

A 15th-century Galician pilgrim was wrongfully condemned to hang in Barcelos, Portugal. At the judge's dinner, he declared a roasted rooster would crow to prove his innocence—and mid-meal, it stood up and crowed.

Maker / Origin

While originally created as terracotta folk pottery by artisans in the Minho region of northern Portugal, mid-century souvenir foundries began casting these roosters in aluminum and pot metal for the booming international tourism market. They remain one of the most recognizable cultural emblems in European folk craft.

Condition & Value

Good vintage condition with minor edge paint wear and small chips along the rim of the comb and tail, consistent with age. Minor wear slightly softens value, though bright original coloration remains intact. Metal and ceramic Barcelos roosters are widely collected folk souvenirs.
