Overview
An ornate, octagonal silver-plated musical cake stand designed to rotate slowly while playing a melody. The top plate features heavily embossed baroque-style scrollwork and floral motifs, designed to catch the light beautifully as a wedding or celebration cake turned on its axis.
Story
Mid-century wedding receptions embraced theatricality with these clever rotating stands. As the couple cut their cake, a hidden wind-up music box mechanism would slowly spin the dessert to the tune of 'Here Comes the Bride.' It transformed a simple cake into a magical, moving centerpiece.
Maker / Origin
While often unmarked, these novelty silver-plated musical stands were heavily produced in post-war Japan and Hong Kong during the 1960s and 70s. Manufacturers specialized in combining traditional European-style repoussé metalwork designs with affordable, reliable mechanical music boxes for the booming Western bridal market.
Condition & Value
The silver plating shows minor surface wear, tarnish in the crevices, and a dark spot of plating loss or adhesive residue in the center of the top plate. The green felt on the bottom is intact but shows light wear. The value assumes the internal music box mechanism still winds, rotates, and plays smoothly.
