Overview
An elegant Chinese hanging scroll painting on silk depicting a bustling, idealized imperial garden landscape with figures, pavilions, and blossoming trees. The work features a signature and seal attributing it to the legendary Jesuit court painter Giuseppe Castiglione (known in China as Lang Shining), rendered in his signature fusion of Western perspective and traditional Chinese brushwork.
Story
In the 18th century, an Italian Jesuit priest arrived at the Qing court and completely revolutionized Chinese imperial art. Giuseppe Castiglione combined Western three-dimensional shading with Chinese ink, creating a style so beloved by the Qianlong Emperor that it sparked centuries of high-quality tribute paintings.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), known by his Chinese name Lang Shining, was an Italian Jesuit brother who served as a court painter to three Qing emperors. His unique ability to blend European chiaroscuro and linear perspective with traditional Chinese silk painting techniques created a highly prized, hybrid court style.
Condition & Value
The painting shows typical signs of aging consistent with an antique scroll, including moderate browning/darkening of the silk ground, minor creasing from being rolled, and light fading to some of the organic pigments. The overall structural integrity of the silk and mounting appears stable.
