Overview
This is a traditional Japanese lidded custard cup, or chawanmushi bowl, featuring classic underglaze blue transfer-ware decoration. The design showcases a traditional sansui (mountain and water) landscape alternating with geometric diaper patterns, topped with a matching flanged lid that doubles as a small side dish.
Story
Dating to the mid-to-late 20th century, this vessel was crafted specifically for chawanmushi, a delicate savory egg custard. The lid is designed to trap steam during cooking and keep the dish warm at the table.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece represents the prolific post-war ceramic workshops of regions like Mino or Arita. These areas specialized in producing durable, beautiful tablewares that brought traditional Edo-period aesthetics into modern household kitchens.
Condition & Value
The porcelain appears to be in good vintage condition with no visible cracks or chips on the glazed surfaces. There is some typical dark shelf wear and residue on the unglazed foot rim of the cup, which is normal for its age and can likely be cleaned. Excellent condition preserves its utility and modest value.
