Overview
This is a classic quarter-sawn oak sectional 'barrister' bookcase featuring two upper leaded-glass 'elastic' book units over a deeper double-door wooden base cabinet. The leaded glass is executed in a handsome diamond-and-hexagonal geometric pattern, a premium upgrade from the standard plain glass of the era.
Story
In the late 1890s, lawyers needed a way to transport their heavy law libraries safely from office to courtroom. This modular system allowed them to pack up individual, glass-protected wooden boxes without unpacking a single book.
Maker / Origin
While Globe-Wernicke of Cincinnati dominated the market, competitors like the Macey Furniture Company of Grand Rapids produced highly competitive, beautifully engineered modular systems. Both companies patented unique interlocking mechanisms and metal side-bands that allowed these cases to stack infinitely while remaining perfectly stable.
Condition & Value
The oak retains a rich, warm patina with minor surface wear consistent with age. The leaded glass panels appear intact without major cracks or bowing, and the door mechanisms appear functional. Original finish and intact glass are crucial to retaining the upper end of the value range.
