Overview
A large, decorative Chinese hanging scroll painting on silk depicting an active imperial garden scene with figures, architecture, and a herd of deer. The lower right corner features a signature reading '海西臣郎世寧繪' (Painted by your servant, Lang Shining of the Western Seas), attributing the composition to the famous Jesuit court painter Giuseppe Castiglione.
Story
In 1715, an Italian Jesuit missionary arrived in Beijing and forever changed Chinese court art. Giuseppe Castiglione, known locally as Lang Shining, blended Western perspective and shading with traditional Chinese ink on silk. This scroll captures that legendary hybrid style, celebrating the grand gardens of the Qing emperors.
Maker / Origin
Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766) was an Italian Jesuit brother who served as a court painter to three Qing emperors: Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong. He pioneered a unique fusion style that combined European three-dimensional realism with Chinese materials and brushwork.
Condition & Value
The painting is in good overall condition with minor creasing, light toning to the silk ground, and gentle wear consistent with age. The mounting and hanging rollers are intact and functional. This stable condition helps preserve its decorative value.
