Overview
A beautifully preserved, hand-carved wooden bread platter featuring a complex geometric rosette design. The central medallion is surrounded by concentric bands of fan-like palmettes and cross-hatching, framed by a chip-carved geometric border on the rim.
Story
Centuries of European alpine tradition dictated that bread, the ultimate symbol of life and hospitality, deserved its own sacred vessel. Families used these deeply carved platters to slice and serve homemade loaves during Sunday feasts. The intricate geometric patterns were often carved by shepherds during long winter months.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this platter is the work of a highly skilled folk artisan trained in traditional European chip-carving (Kerbschnitt). This style of carving was passed down through generations in alpine communities, where woodworkers used specialized short-bladed knives to pop out precise triangular facets from a single piece of hardwood.
Condition & Value
The platter is in very good antique condition with no major cracks or splits, which is rare for old wood. There are minor surface scratches, light scuffs on the reverse, and a beautiful, naturally darkened patina from age. Excellent preservation of the delicate carved edges.
