Overview
A vintage double-sided bronze and enamel ski talisman featuring Ullr, the Norse god of snow and skiing, on one side and the Tyrolean red eagle on the other. Inscribed 'Schutz-Patron der Winter-Sportler' (Patron Saint of Winter Sportsmen), this piece retains its original weathered leather strap used to tie the medallion to a skier's boot or jacket.
Story
Skiers in the mid-20th century Alps carried these pocket-sized deities as literal insurance policies against avalanches and broken bones. This medal invokes Ullr, the Norse god of winter, to watch over the wearer on treacherous slopes.
Maker / Origin
While often produced by regional Austrian and German metal workshops in alpine towns like Innsbruck, these talismans were sold as protective souvenirs in ski resorts. They were crafted by skilled local die-makers who specialized in traditional mountaineering badges and commemorative medals.
Condition & Value
The medal shows a wonderful, authentic aged patina with minor surface dirt. The enamel on the Tyrolean eagle is remarkably intact with only minor wear. The original leather strap is dry and fragile but completely intact, which greatly enhances its character. Cleaning the metal is not recommended as it would strip the historic patina.
