Overview
This is a wonderfully expressive, folk-art example of the classic American sock monkey, crafted from the iconic Rockford 'Red Heel' socks. What elevates this particular piece is her fabulous, personalized styling—complete with a handmade red velvet skirt trimmed in lace, yarn pom-poms on her hands and feet, and a layered metallic chain necklace and belt.
Story
During the Great Depression, the Nelson Knitting Company added a distinctive red heel to their work socks to stand out. Thrifty mothers quickly realized these heels made the perfect, vibrant red lips for homemade stuffed monkeys. This specific monkey was later dressed up like a glamorous lady, turning a simple utility toy into a beloved, stylish companion.
Maker / Origin
While the socks themselves were manufactured by the Nelson Knitting Company of Rockford, Illinois, the true 'maker' of this doll is an anonymous home crafter. Millions of these dolls were sewn by mothers, grandmothers, and children following instructions that Nelson began packing inside every box of socks starting in 1932.
Condition & Value
The doll is in very good vintage condition with light, age-appropriate surface dust and minor discoloration on the cream-colored knit sections. The fabric of the skirt and the yarn pom-poms are intact, and the metal chain accessories show only minor oxidation.
