Overview

An exceptional Japanese woodblock-printed book (ehon) illustrated by the legendary ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi. This volume, titled 'Ichiyusai Gafu', showcases Kuniyoshi's dynamic draftsmanship, ranging from dramatic warrior scenes and mythological encounters to playful caricatures and animal studies. The preface is dated to the spring of Ansei 2 (1855) and written by Hanagasa Bunkyo.

Story

Published in Edo in 1855, this book captures the rebellious, playful spirit of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Amid strict government censorship of heroic themes, Kuniyoshi used clever caricatures and folklore to delight the public.

Maker / Origin

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style. Renowned for his dynamic depictions of samurai, mythical monsters, and his legendary love for cats, Kuniyoshi's imaginative compositions and cinematic action sequences heavily influenced modern Japanese manga and tattoo art.

Condition & Value

The book appears to be in very good antique condition. The original blue embossed covers show minor rubbing and edge wear consistent with age. The interior pages show light toning and minor finger-soiling, but the colors remain remarkably fresh and the binding thread is intact.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
