Overview
An exquisite hand-blown art glass vase featuring a classic squat ovoid form with a flared rim, finished in Steuben's signature Gold Aurene iridescent glaze. The underside displays a polished pontil mark and a hand-engraved 'Aurene' signature with the shape number 2683 faintly visible. This piece captures the luminous, metallic brilliance that defined early 20th-century American luxury glassmaking.
Story
In 1904, English glassmaker Frederick Carder founded Steuben and patented 'Aurene' to rival Tiffany's famous Favrile glass. Carder used sprayed metallic salts on molten glass to create this brilliant, mirror-like iridescence. This specific gold-and-magenta glow was achieved by using actual pure gold in the chemical formulation.
Maker / Origin
Frederick Carder, a visionary English designer, co-founded Steuben Glass Works in Corning, New York. Under his direction from 1903 to 1932, the company pioneered some of the most technologically advanced and artistically stunning colored glass formulas in history.
