Overview
A vibrant, hand-glazed ceramic tile featuring a geometric floral motif in the iconic 'Cuerda Seca' (dry cord) technique. This piece exemplifies the 'Malibu style' that defined the architectural aesthetic of Southern California during the late 1920s.
Story
Founded in 1926 by May Knight Rindge, Malibu Potteries operated for only six years before a fire and the Depression closed it. This tile was born from the very clay found on the Rindge family's private Malibu ranch.
Maker / Origin
May Knight Rindge, the 'Queen of Malibu,' started the pottery to utilize local red clay and provide jobs. Despite its short lifespan, the company produced some of the most sought-after architectural ceramics in American history.
Condition & Value
The tile shows minor edge wear and typical surface crazing consistent with age. There are small chips on the corners which are common for salvaged architectural tiles; these slightly temper the value but prove its authenticity.
