Overview

A fine Japanese hanging scroll painting on silk depicting vibrant chrysanthemums growing alongside a stylized rock face. Executed in the elegant Nanga (literati) style, it features poetic calligraphy inscriptions and red seal stamps signed 'Chikkei'.

Story

Nakabayashi Chikkei was a master of 19th-century Japanese literati art, blending Chinese poetic traditions with refined Japanese brushwork. Chrysanthemums represent longevity and nobility, making this composition a deeply symbolic meditation on nature.

Maker / Origin

Nakabayashi Chikkei (1816–1867) was the son and pupil of the famous Nanga painter Nakabayashi Chikuto. Based in Kyoto, Chikkei became renowned for his delicate bird-and-flower paintings (kacho-ga) and expressive landscapes before his life was cut short during the tumultuous Bakumatsu era.

Condition & Value

The painted image shows mild creasing, light toning, and minor foxing consistent with 19th-century silk scrolls. The silk brocade mounting remains intact and functional. Condition is fair to good for its age, which preserves moderate market value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
