This charming porcelain tile features a whimsical winter village scene by French folk artist Gérard Laplau. Part of the iconic 'Design Naif' collection, it captures the 'naïve' art style with its simple forms, vibrant colors, and nostalgic storytelling.
Story
In 1979, Villeroy & Boch executives spotted a UNICEF Christmas card designed by Gérard Laplau and were so enchanted they commissioned an entire line. This 'postcard' tile was a unique extension of that world-famous collection.
Maker / Origin
Gérard Laplau (1938–2009) was a self-taught French artist who became a pioneer of the 'Naïve' art movement, which celebrates a childlike, unpretentious perspective. His collaboration with Villeroy & Boch turned his pastoral paintings into a global design phenomenon that has remained in production for over 40 years.
Condition & Value
The tile appears to be in good vintage condition with no visible cracks; some minor surface marks on the reverse are typical for its age. Excellent glaze retention on the front ensures the value remains at the higher end of the range.
