Overview
A striking example of American pressed glass featuring the iconic 'Moon and Star' pattern in a deep, vibrant ruby red. This lidded compote or candy dish showcases the classic combination of circular 'moons' and starburst indentations that catch the light with dramatic intensity.
Story
The 'Moon and Star' pattern first appeared in the 1880s, but it was the mid-century revival that turned it into a household icon. This specific ruby hue was achieved by adding real gold to the glass batch during the melting process.
Maker / Origin
Founded in 1905, Fenton was the largest manufacturer of handmade colored glass in the United States. They were masters of chemistry, famous for their ability to produce over 60 different colors of glass, many of which are now highly sought after by collectors.
Condition & Value
The glass appears to have excellent clarity with no visible 'sick glass' clouding. The rim of the jar and the inner flange of the lid should be checked for small 'flea bite' chips, which are common in pressed glass and can reduce value by 20%.
