Overview

This is a classic 'ITP' (It's The Principle) carbide lamp, a piece of essential industrial equipment that literally lit the way for miners in the early 1900s.

Story

In the dark, dangerous depths of American coal and metal mines, light was the difference between life and death. Before the widespread use of battery-powered electric lamps, miners relied on these ingenious devices that mixed water with calcium carbide to create flammable acetylene gas.

Maker / Origin

The Dewar Manufacturing Company of Brooklyn was a titan in the mining light industry during the early 20th century.

Condition & Value

The brass shows a heavy, honest patina and some surface oxidation consistent with age and subterranean use. The reflector appears intact, and the brass identification plate is remarkably legible with clear patent dates, which is a major plus for collectors. The presence of the original mounting hook adds to its completeness.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
