The underside is decorated with a flowing octopus-arabesque (Tako-karakusa) scroll pattern surrounding an apocryphal six-character Ming dynasty mark.

Crafted in 18th-century Arita, this impressive 40cm charger draws inspiration from the classic 10th-century Tale of Ise. Artisans painted the Yatsuhashi bridge and iris motifs in brilliant cobalt cobalt beneath the glaze, creating a timeless masterpiece.

The porcelain kilns of Arita in Hizen Province were the beating heart of Japanese ceramic production during the Edo period. Potters perfected underglaze cobalt techniques, producing work both for the domestic elite and international trade via Dutch merchants.
