Overview
This is a pair of decorative jade bi discs featuring low-relief sinuous dragons on one side and archaic seal script characters on the reverse. The central apertures are intricately carved with openwork borders, and the stone has been treated to mimic the calcified, weathered appearance of ancient excavated jade.
Story
For millennia, Chinese emperors and scholars collected and replicated ancient ritual jades to connect with the virtues of the past. These discs replicate the sacred 'bi' shape, which symbolized heaven, while the reverse characters invoke ancient blessings.
Maker / Origin
These discs were created by skilled lapidary workshops specializing in archaistic (fanggu) jades. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a booming global and domestic market for antiquities led craftsmen to develop sophisticated techniques for artificially aging new jade to satisfy collectors.
Condition & Value
The discs show intentional artificial calcification, weathering, and staining designed to simulate age. There are no obvious structural cracks or major chips visible in the photos, though the edges show minor wear consistent with handling. This simulated wear is part of the archaistic style and does not detract from its value.
