Overview

A classic example of Russian Gzhel porcelain, featuring the iconic cobalt blue hand-painted floral motifs on a crisp white glaze.

Story

Deep in the forests southeast of Moscow lies a cluster of villages that have been the heart of Russian ceramics for nearly 700 years. While Gzhel started with colorful pottery, a 19th-century fascination with Chinese porcelain and Dutch Delftware transformed…

Maker / Origin

The 'Galaktika' (Galaxy) workshop is one of the prominent private enterprises in the Gzhel region, easily recognized by its whimsical elephant logo.

Condition & Value

The piece appears to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or crazing to the glaze. The cobalt remains vibrant and the underside markings are crisp and legible. Excellent condition is expected for decorative cabinet pieces of this age. Modern Gzhel pieces from the early 2000s are widely collected but plentiful.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
