Overview
This is a beautifully detailed, hand-carved sculpture of a Balinese dragon (Naga) rendered from a single block of solid Suar wood. Standing approximately two feet tall, the piece showcases the dynamic, fluid posturing characteristic of Balinese woodcarving, complete with deeply undercut scales, a fierce open-mouthed expression, and inset red eyes.
Story
In Balinese mythology, the Naga is a sacred water deity protecting the earthly realm. Carved in the artistic hub of Ubud, this dragon was created not just as art, but to bring protective, positive energy into a home.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this sculpture is the product of the highly skilled, multi-generational carving workshops of Bali, particularly centered around the villages of Mas and Ubud. These artisans are world-renowned for their ability to look at a raw block of wood and coax out incredibly complex, three-dimensional figures using simple hand tools.
Condition & Value
The sculpture appears to be in very good vintage condition with a rich, warm patina. There is a small dark spot or natural knot visible on the dragon's lower back/hip area, which is common in natural Suar wood and does not detract from its value. Excellent preservation of the delicate claws and teeth.
