Overview
This is a beautifully turned wooden Go-ke (Go stone container), traditionally used in pairs to hold the black and white stones of the ancient strategic board game Go. Crafted from a single block of richly grained hardwood, it features a classic low-profile, rounded silhouette with a perfectly fitted lid designed to hold captured stones during play.
Story
For over 2,500 years, the game of Go has captivated minds across Asia. These specialized bowls, called Go-ke, are designed with a slightly domed lid that players flip over during matches to hold their opponent's captured stones.
Maker / Origin
While this bowl lacks a visible maker's mark, it represents the highly specialized tradition of Japanese woodturning (Kijishi). Master woodturners select specific native hardwoods, aging the timber for years to prevent warping before turning the wood on a lathe to achieve the perfect, seamless fit between lid and base.
Condition & Value
The bowl shows light surface scratches and minor scuffs consistent with age and gentle use. The wood retains a warm, healthy luster without any visible cracks or splits. This honest wear adds to its vintage character and does not significantly detract from its value.
