Glazed Stoneware Oval Planter or Bonsai Pot

Overview

This is a heavy, oval-shaped ceramic planter featuring a rich, mottled earth-tone glaze with variegated brown, gold, and dark blue hues around the upper rim. The unglazed interior and underside show a fine tan clay body, complete with circular indentations meant to be knocked out for drainage if needed.

Story

Mottled reactive glazes became immensely popular during the studio pottery boom of the 1970s and 1980s. Designed for indoor plant displays or bonsai cultivation, this sturdy vessel blends organic texture with functional stoneware craft.

Maker / Origin

While marked with handwritten initials 'H' on the base, it lacks a recognized studio pottery cipher or factory logo. The style is typical of mid-to-late 20th-century production planters made for garden centers, florist supply houses, or studio potters producing functional home goods.

Condition & Value

The exterior glaze is intact and reflective, but the interior contains soil residue and organic buildup. The base shows slight scuffing and remnant adhesive labels. Cleaning the interior will restore its decorative appeal.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
