Overview
A charming three-piece set of hand-carved wooden folk art figures, consisting of an elderly man, an elderly woman in traditional dress, and a stylized horse. Carved in the classic Scandinavian flat-plane style, these figures rely on bold, deliberate knife strokes rather than sanding to define their expressive forms.
Story
Deep in the rural valleys of Sweden and Norway, 19th-century farmers spent long winter nights carving wood by firelight. This humble pastime evolved into a celebrated art form, capturing the quiet dignity of country life in just a few masterful knife strokes.
Maker / Origin
While these specific figures are unsigned, they are carved in the direct tradition of legendary masters like Emil Janel and Trygve Hammer. This style of carving was popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where artists used a single pocketknife to bring blocky pieces of wood to life with incredible personality.
Condition & Value
The figures are in very good vintage condition with original paint intact. There is minor paint wear on the edges and some light dust accumulation in the crevices, which is typical for their age. Excellent preservation of the original paint colors preserves their value.
