Overview

A classic 1970s cushion-case wristwatch featuring the pioneering Calibre 2030 quartz movement. This piece represents the era when Swiss watchmakers fought back against the 'Quartz Crisis' with high-tech…

Story

In 1977, the Swiss watch industry was in a fight for its life against cheap, mass-produced electronics from overseas. Tissot responded by creating the Calibre 2030, a movement that was remarkably over-engineered and featured a unique, almost playful way of setting the time.

Maker / Origin

Founded in 1853 in the Jura Mountains, Tissot has a legacy of 'firsts,' including the first mass-produced pocket watch and the first non-magnetic watch.

Condition & Value

The gold plating shows honest wear and 'brassing' on the sharp edges of the lugs, consistent with decades of use. The dial and hands appear to be in excellent, clean condition. The movement looks remarkably clean with no signs of battery leakage, though its functionality must be confirmed.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
