Overview
This is a classic mid-century Japanese-made refractor telescope featuring a 60mm objective lens and a 910mm focal length. Mounted on a sturdy, adjustable wooden tripod with an equatorial mount, it represents the golden era of amateur astronomy equipment. During this period, Japanese optical companies produced some of the finest consumer lenses in the world, prized for their sharp, high-contrast views.
Story
In the 1960s, the Space Race had everyone looking to the stars. Monolux imported these high-quality Japanese optics to satisfy a generation of backyard astronomers who wanted to see the Moon and Saturn with their own eyes.
Maker / Origin
Monolux was a prominent American importer of high-quality Japanese optical instruments during the post-WWII boom. They sourced their telescopes from elite Japanese workshops like Royal Astro (Tokyo) and Yamamoto, which were legendary for their hand-figured, air-spaced doublet lenses that outperformed many larger modern mass-produced scopes.
Condition & Value
The telescope appears to be in good, honest vintage condition with some light scuffing on the white optical tube and minor weathering on the wooden tripod legs. The metal mount shows typical light oxidation.
