Overview
A striking Japanese porcelain ovoid vase featuring two dynamic Shishi (guardian lions) leaping amidst stylized, swirling blue waves and clouds. The design showcases a masterful blend of traditional underglaze cobalt blue transfer-print wave patterns with hand-painted, slip-glazed relief details on the mythical beasts.
Story
Created in Arita during a golden age of Japanese export art, this vase features Shishi lions leaping through waves. This powerful motif represents the triumph of spiritual strength over the turbulent, unpredictable forces of nature.
Maker / Origin
Established in 1875 by Fukagawa Eizaemon, Koransha (The Company of the Scented Orchid) revolutionized Arita porcelain by blending traditional Japanese artistry with Western technical innovations. They won grand prizes at several World's Fairs, including the Paris Exposition of 1878, establishing themselves as purveyors to the Japanese Imperial Household.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in very good vintage condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major glaze losses. Some light surface wear and minor kiln dust spots are present on the interior and base rim, which is typical for porcelain of this age. Excellent condition overall.
