French Confit Jar with Ochre Glaze

Story

French peasants used these jars to survive winter. Meat was cooked, placed inside, and sealed with a thick layer of fat. The jars were then buried up to their necks in cool cellar dirt to act as a primitive refrigerator.

Maker / Origin

These were produced by local village potters across Southern France, often using regional clays that fired to a warm buff color. While usually unsigned, the specific shape of the handles and the hue of the glaze often acted as a 'fingerprint' for a particular region's pottery tradition.

Condition & Value

The jar shows some surface abrasions and glaze loss consistent with age and utilitarian use. There appears to be some staining on the shoulder, which is common for vessels that held oil. These 'scars' generally add to the rustic charm rather than detracting from value.
