Overview

A finely hollowed natural chalcedony agate snuff bottle featuring dramatic swirling lace and eye inclusions, complete with its original collar, stopper, and carved bone or ivory applicator spoon. The stone's natural dendritic and concentric banding creates a miniature abstract landscape trapped within quartz.

Story

Tobacco arrived in China in the late 16th century, but because smoking was banned by the Qing court, Chinese elites turned to ground snuff kept in airtight stone bottles. Crafted to fit snugly in a scholar's palm, each piece was carved from hardstone using iron drills and abrasive pastes over weeks of labor.

Maker / Origin

Lapidary artists in Beijing and Guangzhou specialized in hardstone carving, selecting raw agate nodules that possessed dramatic internal patterns. Rather than fighting the natural inclusions, master craftsmen carved the bottle to highlight the stone's hidden 'pictures,' a tradition known as image agate carving.

Condition & Value

Appears to be in good vintage condition with no major visible cracks or chips to the agate body. The stopper assembly is detached from the spoon cork but all original components appear present. Complete original spoons intact significantly preserve the value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
