Overview
This is a charming, vintage lidded mustard jar in the highly collectible 'Blue Danube' pattern, featuring a classic underglaze blue floral design on a white porcelain body. Complete with its original domed lid, this piece showcases the distinctive scalloped rim and elegant bulbous shape that made the pattern a mid-century dining staple.
Story
Launched in 1951 by importer Hal Lipper, this pattern was designed to bring the prestigious European 'Blue Onion' aesthetic to postwar American homes. Produced in Japan, it became a beloved symbol of mid-century hospitality.
Maker / Origin
Lipper International (originally Lipper & Ortner) was founded in New York in 1946 as an importer of fine glass and ceramic giftware. They contracted with Japanese porcelain manufacturers in the Seto region—famous for its historic kilns—to produce the Blue Danube line, which remained in production for decades due to its immense popularity.
Condition & Value
The jar and lid appear to be in good vintage condition with no obvious cracks or major chips visible in the photos. There is some typical light shelf wear and minor discoloration on the unglazed foot ring of the jar, which is standard for its age.
