Overview
A delightful mid-century ceramic cheese or serving platter featuring a scalloped, leaf-like rim and a charming, hand-painted three-dimensional mouse figurine perched near the edge. The underside bears the classic incised 'Calif USA 615' mark, identifying it as a authentic piece of California pottery from its golden era.
Story
During the post-war suburban boom, American entertaining shifted from formal dining to relaxed, backyard patio parties. This whimsical platter was designed to spark conversation over cheese and crackers, bringing a playful, lighthearted touch to the table.
Maker / Origin
California Originals (originally operating as Heugold Art Pottery and later changing names) was a major player in the mid-century 'California Pottery' movement, operating out of Torrance from the late 1940s until 1982. They became famous for their bold, oversized, and often humorous serving ware, ash trays, and cookie jars that perfectly captured the sunny, casual lifestyle of the West Coast.
Condition & Value
The platter appears to be in very good vintage condition with no major cracks visible. There is some minor shelf wear on the unglazed foot ring on the underside, and a tiny bit of glaze wear on the outer scalloped rim, which is very common for earthenware of this age. Excellent preservation of the hand-painted details on the mouse.
