Overview
An elegant Chinese porcelain vase decorated in the classic Famille Verte palette, featuring a charming hand-painted scene of a songbird perched on a blossoming branch. The reverse is adorned with a poetic inscription in flowing black calligraphy, while the base bears an apocryphal four-character Kangxi reign mark in underglaze blue.
Story
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chinese potters looked back to the golden age of the Kangxi Emperor for inspiration. This vase was created to capture that classical spirit, pairing a lively songbird with a poetic verse meant to bring harmony and good fortune to a scholar's desk.
Maker / Origin
While the base bears a mark reading 'Kangxi Nian Zhi' (Made in the Kangxi Reign), this is an honorific or apocryphal mark common to the late Qing and Republic eras. It was produced by skilled, unnamed artisans in Jingdezhen, the historic porcelain capital of China, where workshops specialized in reviving the celebrated styles of the imperial past.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in good overall condition with no visible cracks or major chips. There is minor wear to the overglaze enamels and some expected firing flaws, pinholes, and iron spots in the glaze from production. The unglazed foot shows typical light soil and age-related wear.
