Overview

An exceptionally large, 46.5cm diameter Imari porcelain charger bowl featuring a central narrative scene of a noble equestrian traveler beneath Mount Fuji. The wide rim is decorated with intricate geometric panels, floral motifs, and mythical shishi lions in underglaze blue, overglaze enamels, and rich gold leaf.

Story

Created during a period of intense global fascination with Japanese art, this monumental bowl depicts a classic literary journey past Mount Fuji. Its massive scale meant it was designed not for dining, but as a showstopping centerpiece for a grand Meiji-era home or international exhibition.

Maker / Origin

Produced in the historic kiln region of Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, this piece represents the pinnacle of the 'Kinrande' (gold-brocade) style. While unsigned, as was common for large-scale display wares of this era, it was crafted by highly skilled artisans who specialized in complex multi-firing decoration.

Condition & Value

The bowl appears to be in very good antique condition with vibrant enamels and only minor wear to the gilded highlights along the rim. The underside shows typical kiln grit and minor firing imperfections consistent with early 20th-century production. Excellent condition on a piece of this size significantly preserves its value.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
