Overview
A striking three-piece nesting set of traditional Mexican Barro Negro (black clay) pottery, featuring hand-etched sgraffito floral and geometric motifs. The set consists of one large master serving bowl and two smaller companion bowls, all displaying the characteristic metallic, gunmetal-grey sheen unique to this region's mineral-rich clay.
Story
Deep in the valleys of Oaxaca, artisans have transformed local dark earth into pottery for over 2,500 years. In the 1950s, a legendary potter named Doña Rosa discovered that polishing the clay with a quartz stone before firing turned the dull matte finish into a brilliant, metallic black. This set carries that exact lineage, balancing ancient Zapotec heritage with mid-century design innovation.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, these pieces originate from the tight-knit artisan community of San Bartolo Coyotepec. The craft is passed down through generations, with families digging the clay from local pits, aging it, and shaping it entirely by hand without a modern potter's wheel.
Condition & Value
The set appears to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or major scratches to the delicate polished surfaces. The felt pads on the bottom of the large bowl have preserved the base from shelf wear. Excellent condition like this preserves the maximum decorative value.
