Overview
This striking, hand-carved Kachina (Katsina) doll represents Kwahu, the Eagle Dancer, a powerful spiritual messenger who carries prayers to the heavens. Crafted with outstretched wings adorned with real feathers and soft fur trim, the figure features a meticulously painted mask, a ruff of green yarn, and a traditional embroidered kilt.
Story
For centuries, the Hopi have welcomed Katsinam—spiritual messengers—to their mesas from winter solstice to mid-summer. The Eagle Dancer, Kwahu, represents strength and the connection between the earthly realm and the divine. This doll was created to share that sacred story with the wider world.
Maker / Origin
While traditional Hopi Katsina dolls are carved from a single cottonwood root, Navajo artisans in the late 20th century began creating highly detailed, multi-piece wood carvings with added natural materials like fur and feathers for the collector market.
Condition & Value
The doll appears to be in very good vintage condition with vibrant paint and intact structural elements. The delicate feathers and fur trim show some natural dust and minor wear but remain largely complete. Preserving these fragile organic materials is key to maintaining the doll's value.
