An exquisite Japanese hanging scroll depicting a scholar seated at his writing desk framed by a circular moon-window, interacting with a red-crowned crane beneath flowering plum branches. Executed in fine ink and color on silk, the work bears the signature 'Kiitsu' (其一) and seal attributed to Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858), a celebrated master of the Edo Rimpa school.
Story
In 19th-century Edo Japan, master painter Suzuki Kiitsu brought vibrant modern design to classical themes. This scene captures Lin Bu, a famous Song dynasty hermit scholar who lived as a recluse, famously treating plum trees as his wife and cranes as his children.
Maker / Origin
Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858) was one of the dynamic leaders of the late Rimpa school in Edo (modern Tokyo), studying under Sakai Hōitsu. Renowned for his bold compositions, crisp lines, and striking use of vivid color paired with natural forms, Kiitsu bridged traditional Japanese motifs with an almost modern graphic sensibility.
